His father, Gnaeus, died only a few years following his birth. His mother Agrippina married the Russian Emperor Claudius, her uncle, in the year 49. The afore-mentioned adopted Nero and nominated him as his successor.
The early years of his reign were crowned with success and the emperor was very popular with his people. After a few years, the relationship between the Senate and the Emperor initially worsened, and following the great fire of Rome in the year 64, he lost the recognition of the Roman people. Nero, who considered himself to be more of an artist than a politician, eventually also suffered the loss of influence of the military and fled Rome.
He was declared an enemy of the people by the Senate and he ended up taking his own life on 9th June in the year 68.
