Best known for its second voyage of exploration, when naturalist Charles Darwin made the groundbreaking discoveries that led to his theory of natural selection, HMS Beagle embarked on three epic excursions around the world during her years of active service. Launched in 1820, the ship became synonymous with scientific curiosity and discovery, carrying Darwin to the Galapagos Islands and beyond on a journey that would reshape our understanding of the natural world.
To mark the 200th anniversary of HMS Beagle's first voyage, The Royal Mint has released this official UK £2 coin. Designed by William Webb, the reverse features a striking depiction of the famous vessel surrounded by a border of the animals Charles Darwin studied during the ship's second expedition. The edge inscription reads 'THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE'. Struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated standard, this 28.40mm bi-metallic coin weighs 12g and has never entered circulation, retaining its original finish.
