This historical coin originates from the heyday of the Byzantine Empire and is more than 800 years old.
“Scyphate coins” (cup-shaped) were minted since the beginning of the 11th century under various Byzantine Emperors. Each coin is a hand-hammered unicum.
An extra highlight is the depiction of Jesus Christ on each coin, which reflects the typical icon painting of the Byzantine era. Since icons represented exclusively Christian motives, figures of the Bible, above all those of Jesus Christ and Maria with the childlike Jesus, were popular coin motives of this time.
