Built in 1901 in Dundee, RRS Discovery was the United Kingdom’s first purpose-built scientific research ship and the last traditional wooden vessel of its kind. The Royal Research Ship was designed for polar exploration, her voyages transformed the world’s understanding of Antarctica and cemented her legacy in scientific history.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the ship’s launch and the centenary of the Discovery Oceanographic Expedition, The Royal Mint has struck this official UK £2 coin for 2025. The reverse design by Gary Breeze depicts RRS Discovery at sea, framed by hallmarks of the Antarctic region. Finished to a Brilliant Uncirculated standard, the coin also features the edge inscription “DESIGNED FOR ADVENTURE” — a tribute to her enduring spirit of exploration.
This is the first time RRS Discovery has been commemorated on a UK coin. A standout piece for collectors of maritime history and British innovation.
