A national symbol of the United States, the Bison is an animal with rich history, having been a focal point in the 1800’s during the feud between European Americans and Native American tribes.
Roaming across most of North America, the American Bison reached tens of millions before falling to a near-extinction in the late 19th century. The principal reason for this was that the native American tribes depended on the animal as a key source of food, often provoking stampedes in the hope that hundreds of animals would fall to their deaths. Furthermore, the European Americans would task U.S. troops with killing the bison population to drive the Native Americans out of the country.
Honouring a distinct period of American history, this highly unique 5oz copper coin depicts the appearance of a Bison Hunter, pictured on horseback in search of his next beast.
The first release in the long-awaited “Freedom of Life” series, the illustrative detail on this release is there for all to see, featuring a wonderful high relief finish.
