Viewed by many as one of the most momentous periods of Canadian History, The Klondike Gold Rush of 1896 sparked a mass exodus of opportunistic migrants from their hometowns to the Canadian Yukon Territory and Alaska. Following the discovery of Gold near the Klondike and Yukon Rivers, around 100,000 people embarked on the treacherous journey which involved crossing dangerous ice valleys, and scaling rocky mountains. With around half of these opportunists dying from malnutrition, hypothermia or even the avalanches that fell along their route, whilst the risks attached to this treacherous expedition were significant, the rewards reaped by the few that arrived were substantial. Even though the so called ‘Gold Rush’ came to its culmination in 1899, the impact this period of history had on the external environment was remarkable – this event was credited with aiding the United States from vacating its period of depression. Furthermore, its importance to Canadian History is also prevalent in the present day with the population boom it initiated for the Yukon Territory, Alberta, British Columbia and Vancouver.
