Aurelian was born on September 9, 214 in the city of Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica/Serbia). The later emperor completed a military career, and became Commander-in-Chief of the cavalry in Upper Italy, before he was appointed as emperor by his troops in 270. Then, he succeeded in reintegrating the Gallic Empire, which existed from 260 to 274, into the Roman Empire, and conquered the insurgent Alemanni, Goths and Syrians.
By his decree, a festival to honor the sun god Sol was celebrated on December 25, 274, and so the emperor could be seen as the “inventor” of the Christmas festival.
