Since first appearing on British coinage in the late 1600s, Britannia has been reimagined countless amounts of times in some of the most recognisable coin designs. However, her feature on circulation coins was only truly revived during the reign of Charles II when the iconic figure debuted in 1672 on the Farthing – the then King hoped that the feature of Britannia would inspire maritime strength during a time when it was most under threat. 
The importance of the figure of Britannia to British Numismatic History is undeniable. Having featured on coins created under each British monarch, the figure of Britannia has continued to symbolise the strength and courage of a nation during times of adversity. An iconic female figure, Britannia’s inclusion on British Coins is recognised as a symbol of strength for women and embodies the values and vision of a nation. 

Females continue to gain strength in modern society, with the feminist movement gathering considerable traction in the last few centuries, and this Special 2022 Royal Mint Edition seeks to celebrate the diversity of women through an exclusively designed coin.

Depicted quite beautifully on the reverse of this 1oz Silver Brilliant Uncirculated Coin is a unique interpretation of Britannia, incorporating the classical theme of ‘The Three Ages of Woman’ through a depiction of women in three different eras of womanhood.

A bespoke design by accomplished Italian artist and sculptor, Sandra Deiana, the design is inspired by Gustav Klimt’s work in 1905 and has been remastered for modern collectors.
