On 27 September 1825, the world changed forever as Locomotion No. 1 transported 600 passengers and freight from Shildon to Stockton — the first time a steam powered train ran on a public railway. To honour 200 years since this pivotal moment, The Royal Mint has released an official 2025 £2 Brilliant Uncirculated coin. Featuring a powerful design by William Webb, the coin captures Locomotion No. 1 in motion, encircled by the words “THE JOURNEY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD” and finished with the edge inscription “ACTIVE · LOCOMOTION NO 1” — a tribute to the engineering marvel that sparked a global revolution in travel and trade.
