Whilst the United Kingdom experienced a great period of adversity and hardship during World War II, a shining light and figure that lifted the spirits of the nation during the Second World War was the beloved Dame Vera Lynn, a wartime singer known as ‘the Forces Sweetheart’. Famous for her iconic rendition of ‘We’ll meet again’ in 1939, the singer soon became hugely popular around the globe, touring the world to entertain the courageous troops involved in the violence. Following the culmination of the second world war in 1945, Vera Lynn devoted herself to charity work, and aided ex-servicemen recovering from the adversities of the war.
An incredibly inspirational historical figure, Dame Vera Lynn sadly passed away on June 18th 2020 at the age of 103. The public adoration of this great figure is depicted quite beautifully on the reverse of this Silver Proof £2 Coin, illustrating a detailed portrait of Dame Vera Lynn, an iconic historical figure.
Featured on the obverse of this release is Jody Clark’s fifth definitive coinage portrait of Her Majesty the Queen
