The Macedonian 50 Denari polymer banknote is the sole banknote worldwide featuring an angel motif.
The Archangel Gabriel is the heavenly messenger of pronouncement, birth and hope. The template for the motif of the banknote is taken from that of a fresco of the angel from the Byzantine church in Gorno Nerezi, which was constructed in the year 1164.
In addition, this banknote is adorned by the unusual motif of a "40 Nummi" bronze Follis coin from the period of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I (491-518) who characterized the Byzantine monetary system with a currency reform.
