NASA's Juno spacecraft is a robotic mission to study the planet Jupiter, which launched in 2011 and arrived at Jupiter in 2016. The spacecraft is named after the Roman goddess Juno, who was Jupiter's wife in mythology.
The primary goal of the Juno mission is to study Jupiter's composition, gravity field, magnetic field, and polar magnetosphere. To accomplish this, the spacecraft is equipped with a suite of scientific instruments, including a magnetometer, a microwave radiometer, and a gravity science experiment.
One of the most important aspects of the Juno mission is the study of Jupiter's magnetic field. Jupiter has the largest and strongest magnetic field of any planet in our solar system, and it is believed to be generated by a dynamo effect in its core. Juno's measurements of the magnetic field will help scientists understand the structure and dynamics of Jupiter's interior.
Juno's mission also includes studying the planet's atmosphere, including its cloud formations, winds, and temperature. The spacecraft is equipped with a camera called JunoCam, which has captured stunning images of Jupiter's clouds and storms.
Since arriving at Jupiter in 2016, Juno has completed more than 30 orbits of the planet and has made many important scientific discoveries. These include the detection of a new radiation belt around Jupiter, the measurement of Jupiter's gravitational field, and the discovery of a new cyclone at the planet's south pole.
