NASA's Apollo 17 was the final mission of the Apollo program, and was launched on December 7, 1972, with astronauts Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans, and Harrison Schmitt on board.
The mission made a total of three moonwalks, during which the astronauts travelled over 22 miles (35 kilometres) on the lunar surface and collected more than 240 pounds (109 kilograms) of rock and soil samples. The samples provided valuable information about the Moon's geology and history and continue to be studied by scientists today.
In addition to its scientific achievements, the Apollo 17 mission was notable for being the last human mission to the Moon and for setting several records, including the longest manned lunar landing mission and the longest time in lunar orbit. It also marked the end of an era in human space exploration, as NASA shifted its focus to low-Earth orbit missions and the further development of the Space Shuttle program.
The Apollo 17 mission and the broader Apollo program continue to be regarded as a remarkable achievement of human ingenuity and perseverance, and they have inspired generations of scientists, engineers, and explorers to push the boundaries of human knowledge and exploration.
