This extraordinary oval 100 Mon coin was issued in early modern Japan, during the so-called Edo period (1603 – 1868).
The Tokugawa, a Shogun dynasty, ruled over Japan in that era. The 100 Mon coin was minted for the first time in 1835 and was valid until 1870.
In 1870, the old currency system (100 Mon were worth 4 Shu or 1 Bu) was changed during the course of the “Meiji Restoration” and the decimal system was introduced.
