Remembering a Historic Mission
In May 1940, during World War II, German forces launched a massive offensive against France. The German army quickly advanced and pushed British and Allied forces to the coast. By late May, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops found themselves trapped and surrounded near Dunkirk.
Facing the prospect of a devastating defeat, the British launched Operation Dynamo, a large-scale evacuation plan to rescue the stranded soldiers, a coordinated effort between the Royal Navy, civilian volunteers, and the RAF.
Over the course of nine days approximately 338,000 soldiers were rescued including around 215,000 British troops, 120,000 French soldiers.
