On 8th April 1783, Catherine the Great declared the Crimea as Russian “from now on and for all time” and annexed the peninsula. The annexation caused the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1792. Sultan Abdul Hamid I died during the war, and his successor Selim III finally recognized the Crimea’s inclusion in the Russian Empire in the Treaty of Jassy.
